Prof. Umit Isgorur

Ümit İşgörür went to school at Michigan State University School of Music as a visiting scholar and studied cello with Prof. Owen Carman.  After receiving his Master of Music degree at MSU, he began the Doctor of Musical Arts program in Orchestral Conducting with Leon Gregorian at the same school, later received artist diploma at Dokuz Eylül University.


During his stay in the United States, Mr. İşgörür performed as the principal cellist of both the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra.  He studied chamber music with Dr. Walter Verdehr, Robert Dan and Joel Krosnick from the Julliard String Quartet and took some private lessons from Harvey Shapiro, a renowned professor of cello who taught at the Julliard School of Music for over 30 years.

In 1988, Mr. İşgörür proved his success abroad by winning BACH Young Artists Competition.  Since then, he has given numerous concerts recitals master classes in Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Equador, Cuba, USA, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, China, Japan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.


During his 6-year tenure as Assistant Dean of the Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatory, Mr. İşgörür founded the Dokuz Eylül University Symphony Orchestra and served for many years as its coordinator and Artistic Director. Later he appointed as the Dean of the school. Ümit İşgörür bears the distinction of being the first tenured full professor of cello in Turkey.  In the fall of 2021, he taught at the Long Island Music Conservatory in New York USA. He is currently teaching at the CCAA Chengdu University in China.
