The School of Music and Dance is one of the three schools under the College of Chinese & ASEAN Arts. Its predecessor was the School of Arts of Chengdu University, founded in 2005. When the College of Chinese & ASEAN Arts was established in 2017, the School of Music and Dance was set up on the basis of the original Department of Music and Dance.
Currently, the school has a total of 700 students, including undergraduates, postgraduates and international students. It offers three undergraduate programs: Music Performance, Dance Performance and Music Education, with professional directions covering Vocal Music (Bel Canto, National, Pop), Instrumental Music (Piano, Violin, Trumpet, Dulcimer, Flute, Pipa, Erhu) and Folk Dance, etc. Since 2014, the school has enrolled professional postgraduates in the field of Music Performance, covering three directions: Vocal Music, Piano and Music Education. Students have repeatedly won major awards in domestic and international professional competitions such as the China Music Golden Bell Award, the Peacock Cup Vocal Music Exhibition of Colleges and Universities, and the United States Federal Piano Open Competition (Asia-Pacific Region).
The school boasts a strong faculty team. It has invited dancer Shen Peiyi as honorary dean, singer Liu Hegang as specially-appointed dean, singer Jiang Lina as specially-appointed academic dean, and singer Lv Hongwei as specially-appointed vice dean. The school currently has 58 full-time teachers, including 8 professors, 17 associate professors, 24 doctors (including those pursuing doctoral degrees), 3 doctoral supervisors, 22 master supervisors, and 25 "double-qualified" teachers. Among them, there is 1 expert enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, 1 expert for the excellent course evaluation of the Ministry of Education, 1 academic and technical leader in Sichuan Province, 1 outstanding expert with outstanding contributions in Sichuan Province, 1 candidate for academic and technical leaders in Sichuan Province, 1 member each of the Teaching Steering Committee for Pedagogy Majors and Musicology Majors of ordinary undergraduate colleges and universities in Sichuan Province, and 1 member of the Textbook Construction Steering Committee of ordinary undergraduate colleges and universities in Sichuan Province.
The school has achieved abundant research results. Its original musical Red Plum Blossoms in Bloom was selected as a funded project of the National Art Fund in 2022. The musical premiered at the Chengdu ASEAN Art Center and Zigong Yandu Grand Theatre in June 2021, receiving high praise from numerous audiences and critics. Later, it won many honors including the "Excellent Performance Team Award" and the "Best Musical Actress Award" at the 6th "College Musical Award". In August 2022, the school’s municipal-level scientific research platform "Chengdu Intangible Cultural Heritage Dance Science Popularization Platform" was approved and accredited by the Chengdu Science and Technology Bureau. In 2022, the school undertook the major project of Sichuan Provincial Department of Education "Research on the Aesthetic Education Evaluation System of Primary and Secondary Schools in the New Era". In addition, the school has established platforms such as the China-ASEAN Dance Research Center, Basic Music Education Research Center, Shu School Guqin Research Center, and Chinese National Musical Theatre Research Center. In recent years, teachers have successively undertaken 6 projects of the Ministry of Education and 39 projects at bureau level, with research funding received totaling nearly 4 million yuan. They have published 352 academic papers, including 1 AHCI paper, 9 CSSCI papers, 38 papers fully reprinted by Renmin University of China Copied Materials and included in Chinese core journals, as well as 24 monographs and textbooks. The school has won 1 first prize and 1 Best Teaching Design Individual Award from the Educational Administration Information Center of the Ministry of Education, 3 Sichuan Provincial Government Teaching Achievement Awards, 1 third prize of Sichuan Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievements, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes of Chengdu Social Sciences Outstanding Achievements.
The school has seized the academic high ground of Chinese national male tenor, and launched the Yu Junjian National Vocal Music Advanced Training Course. For two consecutive sessions, 5 students have won the gold award of the China Music Golden Bell Award. With strong support from the Chengdu Municipal People’s Government, the school established the Chengdu University Student Choir in 2019. The choir has achieved excellent results in domestic and international professional competitions, winning the Gold Award and Best Work Award at the 10th World Peace Choral Festival, and the first prize at the 10th China Charm Campus Choral Festival.
The school has always adhered to high starting point and high-level development, highlighting the three characteristics of "high-end orientation, internationalization and distinctive features". Facing ASEAN and serving the construction of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, it actively promotes art education and cooperation, multicultural exchange, and cultural inheritance and innovation between China and ASEAN countries. It is committed to building a new platform for cultural and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation under the "Belt and Road" Initiative, and serving the construction of Chengdu as a cultural and creative center in Western China and a world cultural city.
Centering on Chengdu’s strategy of building an "International Music Capital", the school actively serves the development and upgrading of regional cultural industries. It has jointly built research bases with Chengdu to carry out research on cultural and creative industries under the "Belt and Road" Initiative; carried out the "New Rural Children’s Dance Aesthetic Education Project" in cooperation with the Chinese Dancers Association; and taking "dual practice" talent cultivation as the carrier, combined with themes such as elegant art entering campus, volunteer services, sending art to grassroots communities, and condoling the builders of the Universiade Village, it disseminates elegant art and socialist core values through concerts or art performances.
The school will actively integrate into the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle and serve the "Belt and Road" Initiative. It will promote standardized construction and distinctive development simultaneously, attach equal importance to the "Four Returns" and "changing lanes to overtake", and strive to build itself into a well-known, regionally first-class, internationalized, distinctive and intensive school of music and dance in China.
